Acton left Yahoo because he couldn’t get over the way the Internet portal had sown its banners all over the web. The desire to increase revenue at the expense of product quality “left a bad taste in his mouth” about that job, he recalls. And then he saw that old history repeating itself. “What I didn’t like about both Facebook and Yahoo,” he says, “was their attitude: if we can make a dollar here, we’ll do it.” In short, he realized it was time to leave.

Meanwhile, Koum stayed, though he rarely showed up at the office. He was biding his time, waiting for the final reckoning. If the $850 million lost due to his early exit is penance, Acton hasn’t stopped there. He relaunched a small messaging app called Signal, run by Moxie Marlinspike, a security researcher. His mission is to protect the interests of users, and he has already committed $50 million to this goal by setting up a foundation. He is now working with the team that created the open-source encryption protocol that underpins Signal, which protects WhatsApp’s 1.5 billion users (it can also be used in Facebook Messenger, Skype, and Google’s Allo). It is essentially a remake of WhatsApp in the pure, unadulterated form it was originally intended to be: free messaging and calling, end-to-end encrypted, and with no obligations to advertisers.

Acton says Signal already has “millions” of anonymous users and that its goal is to make “private communications accessible everywhere.” That’s where his $50 million contribution could be spent (Signal could previously only afford five full-time employees). The foundation’s goal is to develop a permanent business model for the messenger. For example, this could be a corporate sponsorship, as in the case of Wikipedia, or a partnership with a larger company, as is the case with Firefox’s alliance with Google.
