Richard Mille and McLaren's latest collaboration highlights shared technical innovation and design excellence, culminating in the most complex automatic chronograph to date

Richard Mille and McLaren first joined forces in 2016, and as you might expect, the two were united by a shared passion for precision engineering and innovation.

Since then, the partnership has flourished, producing three top-of-the-line watches, each reflecting McLaren's automotive expertise and Richard Mille's relentless drive to push the boundaries of high-performance timepieces.

The RM 65-01 Automatic Split-Seconds Chronograph McLaren W1 is their fourth collaborative creation, this time inspired by McLaren's W1 hypercar, the heir to iconic models such as the F1 and P1. It is the perfect wrist companion for those lucky enough to own one, while also shining like an exceptional standalone piece.

Regardless, it not only embodies the spirit of speed and performance, but also sets a new benchmark as the most complicated automatic chronograph to date from the Les Breuleux-based brand.

Engine of Excellence
At the heart of the RM 65-01 is the RMAC4 calibre, a 480-part skeletonised movement with a balance wheel that oscillates at a frequency of 5Hz (36,000 vibrations per hour). This high frequency enables the split-second chronograph to measure elapsed time with an astonishing accuracy of one tenth of a second.

Another standout feature is the rapid-winding mechanism, activated via a striking orange quartz TPT pusher, which replenishes the 60-hour power reserve in a matter of seconds.

In keeping with McLaren's ‘Performance Everywhere' philosophy, the RM 65-01 features a variable-geometry winding rotor designed to adjust winding efficiency to match the activity level of the wearer's lifestyle.

Bold design language
From the outside, the RM 65-01's design is inspired by the aerodynamic curves and cutting-edge engineering of the McLaren W1. Crafted from grade 5 titanium, its 43.84mm x 49.94mm Carbon TPT case showcases advanced materials and carefully crafted silhouettes. The layered texture of the Carbon TPT adds depth, while the double bezel design references McLaren's aerospace battery structure.

Richard Mille Creative Director Cécile Guenat and her team worked closely with McLaren during the design process, even referencing early clay models of the car to ensure the watch captured its beauty. The end result is a dynamically sculpted silhouette that feels as integral to the W1's DNA as its engine or chassis.
